How to run a mahjong tournament
Register players in multiples of four and seat them at tables of four. Play a fixed number of rounds with a rotation that mixes opponents, collect each table's scores after every round, and rank players on a leaderboard with a tie-break rule you announce in advance. Finish with prizes and certificates.

1. Choose your rules and scoring
Decide which rules you play (American, Chinese, Hong Kong, Riichi or house rules) and how points are scored, and put both on the invitation. With American rules, players bring their own card.
2. Size the room
Tables = players ÷ 4. Sixteen players need 4 tables, 32 need 8 and 64 need 16. Plan registration in multiples of four so no table is short.
3. Plan the rotation
Change seats every round so players meet new opponents and move through the winds: East, South, West and North. Our kit's schedules cover 12 to 64 players and 3 to 6 rounds; from 32 to 64 players nobody shares a table with the same opponent twice in 6 rounds.
4. Run check-in and scoring
- Check players in and hand out their seat for round 1
- Put table numbers on every table
- Each table fills in a result slip at the end of the round
- A scoring desk enters the slips and updates the leaderboard
5. Settle ties before you start
Announce the tie-break order in advance, for example: total points, then number of wins, then bonus points.
6. Prizes and certificates
Beyond first, second and third place, small awards keep every table involved: most wins, best sportsmanship, best table spirit. For a fundraiser, thank your top fundraiser and volunteers too.
Running it as a charity fundraiser
Track entry fees, sponsors and any raffle against your fundraising goal, and reconcile the cash at the end of the day. Raffles can be regulated where you live, so check local rules first.
